What is the Foreign Service?

The Foreign Service is a division of the United States Department of State that concerns itself with the act of diplomacy; worldwide promotion of peace & prosperity, the protection of American citizens, and the advancement of U.S. interests abroad.

Members of the Foreign Service generally serve at one of the hundreds of diplomatic missions abroad. They staff embassies and consulates of the United States all over the globe, along with domestic postings in Washington D.C. and other locations.

A member of the Foreign Service is a diplomat, and representative of their country abroad. It is an experience rich in culture, diversity, and the opportunity to travel while having an impact on the world.
